Certificates for land and lots, 1848-1870.

Record shows initial payments made to Illinois and Michigan Canal Trustees for town lot and other land purchases. Entries include purchaser name; lot number or tract legal description; acreage and price per acre, when applicable; total purchase price, including interest; payment amount made; amount due in three subsequent installments; transaction date; final cancellation record; and deed issuance date following payment receipt. Because canal land could be purchased on an installment basis (i.e., a down payment and three equal installments), certificates were used to record lot and land sales; and patent issuance after all payments had been received by canal officials.
